White Chrysanthemum

At       Approved Chrysant we not only want to produce top quality chrysanthemums, we want to produce the greenest as well. In this way we want to make this world more beautiful. For ourselves as well as for our future.

the Greenest White Chrysantemum

Our Breed:
Chrysanthemum Baltica

We grow one variety: the white Chrysanthemum Baltica.

It has pure white petals and a bright green center. A beautiful flower and valued for its out-standing features of strength, vase life, reliability, and superior quality.

Our Approach:

We implement the most advanced techniques to make our products sustainable. Learn more

We buy CO2 from the nearby port of Rotterdam. We use their waste CO2 (next to our own) in our greenhouse to grow our Chrysanthemums which will transform it into O2.

To keep our soil (and our Chrysanthemums) healthy we use soil bacteria. By keeping the right balance of bacteria’s in our soil we can keep out a lot of plagues and other diseases which could be harmful for the roots of the Chrysanthemums.

As only a few growers do in Europe we root our Chrysanthemums ourselves. We believe the better the start of the rooting, the better our Chrysanthemums will grow. This results in better, and equal stems.

To keep our greenhouse cool in the summer we use rainwater which we ‘catch’ in our basins. In this way, we don’t need to ‘paint’ our greenhouse in the summer, and rub it off again in autumn. No chalk paint used, and more light for our Chrysanthemums

Our flowers are picked by hand, and sorted by a state-of-the-art sorting machine. In this way we can guarantee that you will receive our Chrysanthemums (every stem!!!) in the right quality and weight.

Approved-menu (1)-22.png

Our greenhouse is always filled up 100%. So no energy goes to waste on empty spots in our greenhouse. After harvesting the last stems in a department, the soil is directly prepared and planted within 24 hours.

We build a wall around our bunching machine to reduce the noise for our staff. This wall is made of our chrysanthemum waste mixed with Mycelium. Together this makes a very strong natural wall. So these walls are good for us, and for the environment!

We try to reduce the use of plastic as much as we can. Where we need to use it (sleeves) we use 100% recycled plastic to make an impact on nature as little as possible.

Selection Process:

Our flowers are stem by stem sorted by a machine (and not by hand). This machine checks every stem on 7 aspects before it will be packed. We are one of a few growers using such a machine.

In this way we can guarantee every stem in a bunch has the same weight and uniform quality. Our customers appreciation is very high because of this selection method.  It reduces their waste and makes them sell a much higher quality. With this machine we can even produce a customized product for certain customers. From certain weights, to different amount of stems per bunch.

Packaging:

We pack our chrysanthemums in our own branded boxes, yet we didn’t use any ink. This is unique in the flower industry, and less polluting.

The sleeves in which we pack our chrysanthemums are made of 100% recycled plastic. At Approved, we use as little plastic as possible.

The flowers we sell directly to our customers contain more bunches per box than the boxes we sell through the auction. Saving space is more efficient in saving on transport costs and reducing CO2 footprint.

Sustainability:

For our cuttings we use a lighter mix for rooting. In this way the root better, and we save peat. In our greenhouse we use natural enemies of the insects that harm our Chrysanthemums. In this way we don’t need to use any chemicals. The last year we have been 100% biological!

How does this works: in our nursery, an army of our smallest employees fights against diseases and pests. If the thrips enter our greenhouse, for example, we will compete with Amblyseius Cucu-meris. This mite is only one millimeter in size, but extremely effective. Every week, we make an analysis of the entire greenhouse, assessing whether additional natural enemiesshould be used against pests. We even feed the natural enemies of the insects, so they stay alive when there are no bad insects in our greenhouse.

On our greenhouse we have sprinklers to cool down the greenhouse in the summer. We use rainwater for the sprinklers. Because we use sprinklers we don’t need to chalk our greenhouse, and later wash it off. The chalk normally contains a type of glue, so it doesn’t wash of after a bit of rain. At the end of the summer season it needs to be removed. By using the sprinklers we don’t use all of this.

CO2: To produce a high quality chrysanthemum we use extra Co2.

As we are very near to the harbour of Rotterdam where Co2 is a waste product and polluting the environment, we buy and transport this Co2 to our greenhouses were our chrysanthemums use it to grow and turn Co2 into oxygen.

After harvesting we directly prepare the soil, and plant the new Youngplants. In this way we use every m2 of our greenhouse every day, so we don’t waste any energy.

Unlike most other Chrysant-hemum growers in Holland, we root the cuttings ourselves, this saves us trucks driving to us suppling us with rooted youngplants.

Mycelium Wall built at the Approved greenhouse

To reduce the noise of the packaging machine in our working facilities we created a mycilium wall. Next to mycilium this wall consists of hennep and waste of our own chrysanthemums. A biological wall to protect our most biological asset… our people.
